Law of the Sea & Boundary Delimitation

The UKHO's Law of the Sea service provides expert advice on all matters relating to the definition and delimitation of maritime space.

This expertise was established early in the last century for the provision of expert technical advice to all UK government departments. The service was broadened in 1996 to provide a commercial consultancy and is now available worldwide to any government or commercial organisation. The service provides calculation and graphic depiction of all maritime boundaries and zones, including desktop studies of the outer limit of the Continental Shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and;
  • The provision of expert technical advice during Bilateral Negotiations and/or third party adjudication of the above.
  • Provision of seminars and presentations to interested groups on all aspects of Law of the Sea and Law of the Sea training.
  • Use of the UKHO's unparalleled resources, in the form of both its archive of historical worldwide chart data and its first class geodetic, photogrammetric and satellite imagery expertise.
  • Shared expertise and resources with the International Boundaries Research Unit at Durham University for boundary questions and the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton for Continental Shelf issues.
